Once upon a time there were eight Little Bonbons

Along came Santa with a tall glass of milk

With no-one to tell him about what was what
He cut them all open to check out their guts
Although the cookie dough made him smile
The peanut butter sent him to the sleigh for another pile

He brought in more packages and sat down for another The Chocolate Kahlua gave him a giggle to smother So he grabbed up the carrot cake and said with a smile
"That will take me on at least another mile"

Those little bonbons stuck in his head And surely that family must still be in bed He came back 3 more times later that night Each time bearing more gifts, to get just one more bite

The next year as it happens Santa remembered that house
He traveled there first, quiet as a mouse

Updates on its arrival, but this groom's cake has just left my safe, non moving, temperate environment for a 4 hour journey to the wedding site. I will update when I've received the call that it arrived and its ok, otherwise I'll be sick all weekend over it. Then I will resume breathing.

And the cherry on it....by manually turning the fly wheel, the fan belt turns the alternator and fan blade, and the sound chip plays the sounds of the engine this cake was modeled after, starting up.

This Baby Grand piano cake is for a musician who composes music of his own, including a song called Calabasis (I hope I have the spelling right). I don't know the tune, so the notes on the sheet music are pretty random, I wouldn't suggest trying to play them. They're written on rice paper with edible ink. Its a chocolate cake with Oreo butter cream filling. Inside the piano bench is a recordable sound chip I used to record a very quickly remembered tune of Happy Birthday on our piano...to be a place holder until the gentleman's daughter can record herself singing Calabasis.

The cake itself was designed by my daughter (with a little creative nudging) to be a popcorn box on top of the pink harlequin cake, with animals around it that you might win as prizes at the carnival. The cake by itself wasn't as fun as the whole day put together, where our daughter with her little friends had water balloon fights, face painting, t-shirt stamping, cupcake decorating, balloon animals, and dress up time. It was a lot of fun. The bottom cake is vanilla cake with blueberry filling, the top cake is white chocolate chocolate chip cake with chocolate ganache filling. The popcorn on top is hand molded and painted painstakingly one by one. All worth it.

Moab RRM Container

In Moab, Utah there is a giant pile of RRM(Residual Radioactive Material) or Uranium Mill tailings from the Uranium mining done there in the 60s and 70s. It sits in a big pile next to the Colorado River. It is being picked up, put in containers, lidded, cleaned off, and put on a train to move it 30 miles away to be dumped and covered in a secure cell where it won't leech into the waterways. Each container, looks like this one below. This cake was made to celebrate the 2 Millionth ton of RRM relocated.

An almost Christmas time wedding was themed with blue and silver and white and the venue was beautiful. The groom's cake was a laptop with a little marriage programming code on the screen. The cake tiers were Vanilla cake, Red Velvet, Almond Poppyseed, and Chocolate cake with oreo buttercream filling. My favorite part about this cake was how clean and white it was, with these beautiful silver, blue, and clear snowflakes all over it. Some were sugar, some were Christmas ornaments.

Update: The cake board fit JUST inside the box, the box JUST fit under the seat in front of me, nobody tackled me in the airport and it made it unscathed. The pumpkins and leaves were all airbrushed.

This little cake is adorable, for a baby shower for twins, a boy and a girl. The pea pod on top is made to be kept in a display case for the mother to be. I finished the cake and took pictures and then realized I was going to put a string of green pearls around each of the plaques to look like peas. Each plaque has same color toys cut out on them to give a very classy design.

Ok, in the 80s when Thunder Cats was a big cartoon, I was on a farm in Northern Alberta and got 1 TV channel on a clear day...so I missed out. But this cake was for a fan of the cartoon and features Lion-O who has to be a very brave man wearing a unitard with a peekaboo stomach hole.

I just turned this in at the TN Valley Fair today, the fair theme is 'Come And Get Your Farm On'. He reminds me of Al Borland :) He's 31 inches tall. He's a Tennessee farmer with his UT overalls on, straw in his mouth, just toting that bale of straw on over to the cows. Cobblestone yard and rubber boots finish it off.

I had so much fun at this class today, learned how to properly heat, color and flavor the sugar, and how to make flower petals and put roses together. The blue ball and the apple are both hollow, as well as the stem on the rose. Made by forming a ball over the end of a tube with a little hand pump to push the air into it. Then just keep turning and pumping air in until you get the right shape and cool it until it hardens. So many possibilities, I'm really excited to try more

This one was a delicate balance of adding humor to a casual wedding and the delicate ceramic topper chosen. The flowers on the bride statue are ceramic and part of the topper, the rest I made to match those. Its hard to tell, but the cake is a very subtle green. The wedding is at the dock, and he would have you think he'd rather dive in with the pirhanas than get married.

This sweet little baby shower cake was a spice cake with maple buttercream filling. Classic Pooh tiles on the sides of the cake made from fondant, hand molded and edged. They're 2 dimensional but popping off the tile a little, so almost 3D. Eeyore on top is fondant/gumpaste and entirely edible.

Ms. Kristi is Kayti's teacher and is having a very small wedding next month so I was only too happy to do this Hawaiian themed cake for her shower and it was made all the better because Kayti painted the centers of all of the plumeria. The hibiscus and plumeria are fondant. Its a coconut creame cake with semi-sweet ganache filling and the sides are covered in coconut.

Great Cake Bake entry 2010

This cake was done in dedication to my Aunt Diane who lost the fight with cancer last year. She was an amazing woman, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, author of childrens books, storyteller, self appointed educator of condoms at each family reunion. The cake show was put on by the Knox County Public Library so I thought it fitting to incorporate this.

The chair is mostly made from modeling chocolate and covered with Fondant and royal icing. The middle tier is representing the library, with brick, a bronze bust, library tables, and a dedication plaque to my Aunt. The books around the bottom tier are all fondant, with hand painted titles (this took 5 nights to complete) The books are all the children's stories she published, and the one she is reading to the children is "Laney's Lost Momma". The tile floor on the top tier and base are fondant, scored with a ruler, airbrushed to look like stone, and then grouted with royal icing. The children and storyteller are all fondant.

Troy's superman birthday bounce bash

My son's birthday is always a challenge because he thinks I can make ANYTHING. So we came up with this idea together since his birthday party was at a bounce place.

The jump castle cake is chocolate cake with swiss meringue buttercream. Superman is made from PVC pipe and modeling chocolate then fondant. As always, it was a challenge and great fun at the same time. It ended up being 35 inches tall. His cape is made from gumpaste/fondant and really does only touch him at his shoulders.

Big Brother was there to protect the new baby and make sure nobody wakes her up. The top 2 tiers were pumpkin spice, the bottom was a neopolitan (one chocolate, one cherry, one white layer) The baby on top was sleeping on top of the cake, toes just sticking out, and brother shushing everyone. The bottom tier is quilted, middle tier coroneli lace, and top tier with dragees on it.

I just found the picture of this cake from 2 years ago, it was a 4 tier stacked cake with whipped frosting and real roses. I set it up and stacked it and finished it up, then had to move it inside because it was 90 degrees and the wedding was running late.

By request I made this roasted little turkey. Almond poppyseed cake with rasberry/cranberry filling. The kale, cranberries, and orange slices on the tray are real, but the turkey, wings, and stuffing are all cake. The stuffing is cubed pieces of cake toasted in the oven, the rest of the cake was carved up, covered in fondant with a little added texturing, and then airbrushed.

Casey at the Bat

Our softball teams got together for an after season party yesterday so I made this cake to go. It has the first 2 verses of Casey at the Bat and Casey himself on top. I had planned a much larger Casey (there is a half finished 2 foot tall Casey on my table at home) but I threw my back out and couldn't finish the big version and had to make the little one to top the cake with. The cake itself was a white chocolate cake with a chocolate chip buttercream filling.

Blue's Clues Birthday

This cake was for our very adorable 2 year old neighbor, she does love Blue's Clues. Its a yellow cake with a chocolate ganache filling. It came out cartoony and fun and she got to keep Blue off the top because he was made from gumpaste/fondant. The Blue's Clues big red chair is all cake.

I know I did one like this last year, but its just so fitting for this time of year. The cake is a pumpkin spice cake with a vanilla swiss meringue buttercream. We took it to a picnic in the park.

Tea with the Queen

My daughter only turns 4 once so we pull out all the stops. Because Grandma was visiting at the same time we did a 'Tea with the Queen' birthday party. The Queen (grandma) read 'Tea for Ruby' to all the dressed up little princesses and served up home made root beer in the miniature china tea set. It was a beautiful sight to see all the wonderful manners all of the children had as they very carefully drank their tea.

The cake was a 3 layer funfetti cake with cherry filling and swiss meringue buttercream icing. On top, my very own Kayti having tea with her babies, wearing the same dress up dress that Grandma bought her for her birthday, so they would match. This was a wonderful day!!

What is a 34 year old bachelor thinking about?...Oh, the usual....guns, women, the marines, his dog, his mustang, his jeep, designing tattoos, his online classes, etc. The scary part is that its a red velvet...so cutting it up will be fun.

Troy's Pre-K graduation cake

Its bittersweet to see the kids growing up. Today was our son's Pre-K graduation, he starts Kindergarten next month but this is a big step. They did a whole cap and gown ceremony with slide shows and video of the kids from throughout the year (He's only been there 3 weeks but they still had plenty of him). After the ceremony was a picnic in the park so I made this cake to go along. Its a marble cake with an Oreo butter cream filling. The little feet under the top cake are 9 boys and 5 girls for the kids in his class ( the girls all have purple toenails). The graduation cap is cake, the cap board is cardboard covered in Fondant. The tassel is fondant as well.

This is my first cake in Tennessee and with limited supplies until the rest get here, all my cakes will be 8 inch round cakes :D

This cake for Miss Amy is a lemon cake with a vanilla swiss meringue butter cream. She's the kind of lady that is sweet and flowers and lace but you can see a glint in her eyes of how she may really be. It was great fun to make but boy do I need to practice roses. The roses and tiger lilies are fondant, the leather bikini wearing, whip toting figure on top is fondant as well.

Well, big changes is our lives and my cake pans are all packed up for now. We're in the process of trying to sell our house and move from Loveland, CO to somewhere in East Tennessee to pursue a position I've been offered. I'll update this as soon as I make my first cake in the new house.

St. Patricks Day birthday party

Some great friends of ours share birthdays right around the happy green day, so I combined it all in their cake. It was a green maple walnut cake with swiss meringue buttercream...looked funny, but tasted great. Multicolored shamrocks overlap all over the cake.

Baseball Training Camp

For the baseball fan going down to watch the Anaheim Angels and the LA Dodgers spring training. Peanuts, baseballs, a glove, bat, and infield are all made out of Fondant.

UPDATE: The cake won 2nd place

My entry this year for the Sweet Times in the Rockies cake show at the Denver Home and Garden Show. The Extravagant Cakes category this year had a theme of Caribbean Pirates.

The inspiration I used was the story of Captain Blackbeard, who stole a french slave ship and renamed it The Queen Anne's Revenge. He was a ruthless pirate who took many ships many by sheer intimidation. When his crew became too big and unruly, he ran his flagship aground on a sandbar off the coast of South Carolina and abandoned it and most of his crew. Leaving only with a handpicked short list of his closest.

This was the kind of project I could have just kept working on if I had time....adding more pirates, more equipment, more canons...etc.

I'll update with the results I'll find out sunday at the awards ceremony.

This little snoopy cake was definitely fun. Its an almond poppyseed cake with rasberry buttercream filling in it. Its for a 1st birthday so little Woodstock is sitting on the smash cake.

This smoking volcano cake was for a young man named Keegan. There was a cup in the top of the cake to put the dry ice and water in. I'm still hoping to get more pictures of the smoke coming down the sides of the cake.
